Wonderful Windows

The latest addition to the deVOL range of products is beautiful, traditional windows, all made here at deVOL in Leicestershire, by our carpenters. Like our bespoke kitchens the windows are all hand made and painted to order.

We find our customers are very often renovating their home, so when they come to us for their kitchen and flooring they chat about other aspects of their project. Windows is a topic that always comes up, as it is definitely one of the most visually important choices you make for your house both inside and out. Past customers have persuaded us to make their windows, as they trusted us to get the quality and proportions just right. So we decided we would like to start offering these windows to everyone, it seemed a natural step.

I have a small cottage in a pretty village outside Loughborough, the property was a mess and everything needed doing from the floorboards up. The project took a good few months but the most exciting and amazing change was when my deVOL windows were fitted, what a transformation. Beautiful pale blue, solid hardwood windows that have turned a dodgy looking cottage into something i look at everyday and love.

Hanging out in the garden

Another blog that’s not obviously related to my job as a kitchen designer! However, for me, the garden is an extension of the kitchen especially when the summer comes. Taking all your lovely fabrics and cushions outside gives you another room to spend time in when the sun shines, an extension to your normal house. I love to see vintage eiderdowns and flowery crockery on the lawn, an old deckchair and an olive tree in a pot. Pottering in the kitchen and bringing out a bowl of fresh salad and some bread puts you in the holiday mood. If you take time to create a feeling of kitchen and garden being as one you can create a home that feels like your on holiday even if you’ve just come home from work.

While flicking through the latest Elle Decoration magazine to see our deVOL advert, I noticed a small piece on an Interiors shop I visited in New York called John Derian http://www.johnderian.com The trip was ages ago but it reminded me of the shop which was amazing, everywhere you looked there was something fascinating to catch your eye from little cards and candle holders to dried mushrooms for hanging on your wall. I wanted to take pictures of everything i saw, every single thing was unusual and sometimes weird but very different, it was so inspirational. Take a look at their website as although some parts are very ornate the mix of things for sale is quite fascinating. There is a section on seaweed images, take a look they are so delicate and beautiful and have given me some ideas for our next deVOL Spalshback design http://www.johnderian.com/index_decoupage.html

One of the sections on the John Derian website sells items made by quirky designers from all over the world, very select and truly original. I decided to look on the section entitled Astier de Vialette http://www.astierdevillatte.com/ and was very happy to find a Parisian based shop that sells very exciting ceramics among other things. I love Mediterranean styled pottery in beautiful bright white and pastel colours, Astier de Vialette is rather more sophisticated table wear, but still with a continental feel. Quite beautiful and very covetable. Have a look at the website the products are beautiful but the website itself is fun and different too.

traditional sash and casement window range

In everything deVOL does follows the same philosophy: simple things beautiful made. The introduction of our sash windows and casement windows keeps firmly within this philosophy.

In the construction of our sash windows we use Oak for the frames and boxes and Douglas Fir for the lights. We also use Douglas Fir for the construction of our casement windows.

We have made a conscious decision when choosing these materials to buck the trend in the window industry, which is toward using species such as Sapele or Maranti, which rather than being native are taken from our rainforests. We feel that as Oak and Douglas Fir out perform these materials in terms of durability they are the best choice both ethically and practically.
