Secrets of the Castle

27th November 2014

By Kitty Burrows

After watching Secrets of the Castle with Ruth, Peter and Tom on Tuesday night, I found myself in awe of the archaeological project that has been undertaken at Guédelon in Yonne, Burgandy.

Fifty people are currently working on the development of a medieval castle which aims to educate and provide sustainable jobs in specialist areas, such as woodcutters, blacksmiths, ropemakers and stonemasons, all using methods that would have originally been used in 13th century France.

Moments afterwards, looking down at the new copy of Elle Decoration Country, I coincidentally came across this beautiful spread, Medieval Modern, featuring a 12th century castle near Antwerp. Designer Axel Vervoordt has transformed this historic beauty into a haven to house his extensive collection of antiques and contemporary artwork. Each of the fifty rooms throughout the castle are as breathtaking as the last.

Both castles represent a wonderful achievement by skilled craftsmen – my only wish now is to visit them both one day ..

See the full spread in Volume 5 of Elle Decoration Country, available now at deVOL Kitchens, Cotes Mill.
