can a kitchen be a dream?

Is a dream kitchen something grand and fancy? Is it something subtle and understated? For us, here at deVOL a dream kitchen is one that is easy to live with, it is a place that is functional, well organised and beautiful. A dream kitchen is trouble free and makes you and anyone who enters it feel calm and happy. Don’t be tempted to go for maximum wow and impact or instant gratification; you know that will fade with time. Try to temper your desire to shoe horn everything you ever dreamed of into your kitchen or your dream may not last.
Always always put your money (however much or little you have) into well designed, good quality cupboards with some provenance. Buy really good fittings that work smoothly and just look like they will last. Try to use natural materials like wood and marble, anything natural will wear in a characterful way rather than just wearing out. An old wooden worktop can hold memories and gain character but a manmade material will just get tired and tatty and eventually need replacing, are these not the things that make a true dream kitchen? Nothing is more impressive than quality and good design.
Many people feel ‘dream kitchen’ means expensive, impressive and oozing with expensive features, but a perfect dream is always a calm and soothing experience where everything is easy and beautifully uncomplicated.
When you think about a new kitchen you may want gadgets and acres of shiny worktops, you may want pop up extractors and built in coffee machines, you may want a huge Island and prep sinks. You may think this is going to make your life better, but here at deVOL we offer kitchens that make life better by design and careful choices, not by quick fix solutions that are bound to fall short of their expectations.
We think beauty comes from simplicity, not only visually but practically too, gadgets rarely deliver on their promises for long so if you don’t really need them don’t risk spoiling your new kitchen by including them. Broken appliances are just a nuisance so keep it simple. Whether you have a traditional hankering or prefer something a little more contemporary is down to personal taste but no one can disagree that whatever your taste, simplicity is always the key.
The importance of keeping it simple transcends in my opinion to all things in the home, this doesn’t mean you can’t do crazy or quirky or bright or bold but with restraint and always remember the well-know and utterly current words of wisdom by William Morris ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
