The clouds are rolling in…

7th September 2015

For the past week my Instagram has been full of clouds, not the ones indicating the end of the Summer, but a huge balloon cloud that has gathered over Covent Garden. It looked so cool, I had to check it out.

This Instagram eye-candy is the latest piece from Charles Pétillon, his first live work outside of France. Titled ‘Heartbeat’ Pétillon wanted to ‘represent the Market Building as the beating heart of this area – connecting its past with the present day to allow visitors to re-examine its role at the heart of London’s life.’ He goes on to explain that ‘each balloon has its own dimensions and yet is part of a giant but fragile composition that creates a floating cloud above the energy of the market below.’

This energy became more apparent when illuminated by huge lights hidden between the pearly white balloons. Lit up, it transformed the room into an extremely atmospheric space that encapsulated the excitement of the busy market. Artsy metaphors aside, it was a really beautiful and impressive piece that is well worth a visit. The cloud will loom over London’s famous market until 27th September, and while you’re there you can always treat yourself to a custom made magnum from the Magnum Pleasure Store. Well, that is if you can brave the pretty lengthy queue.
