The Good Pub Quiz Guide: London
15th April 2016
The sun was shining on Wednesday so me and Zoë decided to make the most of it and find a beer garden after work. Turns out, it’s not the easiest thing to find, in London space is a luxury that not many pubs can afford! But at last we stumbled across a little gem on Upper Street, right in the middle of work, my house and Zoë’s new house!! With its bare brick walls, quirky up-cycled barrel stools, massive beer selection and even a man making fresh pizzas in the back, The Tap Room most definitely ticks all the ‘cool London pub’ boxes and it even has a beer garden!! After a few halves, we discovered there was a pub quiz downstairs and so we thought “why not?!” and headed down to the basement bar with our delicious fennel sausage pizza and every certainty that we were going to look shamefully dim. But no! Fast forward 4 rounds and we were the team to beat!!! The last round was a little tense, anagrams of prime ministers names was not our strong point, but we powered through and we actually won!
I love a pub quiz, but I’ve never won before! We were sooo excited and now I think we’ve caught the bug and can’t wait to give it another go. So here’s a few options, whether you’re North or South, there’s a quiz for every night of the week…well, apart from Fridays and Saturdays, apparently that is a no go!
North: The Harlequin – Clerkenwell
This cute historic pub tucked away behind Sadler’s Wells Theatre puts on a pub quiz on Monday evenings for just a pound a person. The prize may only be a round of drinks but they do offer a friendly atmosphere, some great beers and a rather tempting cheese board!
Quizzing starts at 8pm, but this place is pretty cosy so I’d get there early!
South: The Antelope – Tooting
Loved by locals and runner up in Time Out’s Love London Awards 2015, this pub mixes cool vintage interiors with a fun and varied set of questions, making it the place to go if you find yourself south of the river on a Monday night.
Starting at 7:45pm, it’s free to join and you could win £50!!
North: Old Queens Head – Islington
If you’re looking for something a bit different this is the one for you! Full of fun and tomfoolery, past rounds have included best x-factor sob story, guess the punch and kazoo-keoke…oh yes, the memory of my friend utterly failing to kazoo to the tune of Stevie Wonder will stay with me forever.
For 2 quid each its a good laugh with a big group of friends. Registration opens at 7pm and round 1 starts at 8pm.
South: The Roebuck– Southwark
Zoë’s aunty Christine actually introduced us to this one. Christine is amazing, she is like the worlds best travel guide, she always finds the coolest places and the hidden gems! This was another great find; the food was amazing and the quiz was challenging but still loads of fun. We came 4th at the time…we’d clearly not honed our quiz skills yet!
Again the quiz starts at 8pm but I’d get there early and go for dinner as the food was delish! £2 per person with a maximum of 6 per team.
North: Boogaloo – Highgate
If the name is anything to go by this quiz caters to the quirky. The ‘Who killed Bambi’ music quiz claims to be ‘the longest running and greatest music quiz in London’. So good, in fact, they even have a league!
The quiz starts at 8 pm but they do recommend booking your team in advance by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
South: The Pheonix – Camberwell
A good old classic pub quiz with lots of variety and a charismatic host, a good option to get you through ‘Hump Day’.
£2 a head with a cash prize up for grabs for the winners, this is an early starter at 7pm…well it is a school night!
North: The Hemingford Arms– Islington
A kooky little pub near Highbury and Islington station which attracts both old locals and trendy hipsters alike. Along with a good dose of general knowledge questions they also throw in a specialist subject round which changes weekly.
Bobby kicks the quiz off at 8 pm. Everyone adds £2 to the kitty which is taken home by the winning team.
South: The Elm Park Tavern, Brixton
A popular pub quiz that you probably need to book in advance. It has great reviews across the board, particularly for the all important sculpture round (?!) There’s no food but you can order pizza and ask for cutlery at the bar.
The quiz commences at 8:30 pm (ish) and costs £1 a person. Up for grabs is a £35 cash prize and a few bottles of booze for the runners up!
Friday and Saturday
I can’t find any!! If you do know any, please let us know. You may have to just be that guy who brings trivial pursuit to the party!
North: Ma’ Plucking Quiz – Soho
Finger lickin’ chicken and a drag queen host?..of course, it’s London!
For £24.50 you can treat yourself to a 3 course meal, a drink and evening of quizzing hosted by Drag superstar Vinegar Strokes. Every Sunday at 7pm.
South: The Clapham North – Clapham
For a more chilled Sunday vibe head to The Clapham North. Another runner up in last years Time Out London Loves Awards, at this trendy Clapham boozer you can enjoy themed rounds and a good old Sunday dinner.
£2 per person and it all kicks off at 8 pm.
