5 things to do at LDF 2017

15th September 2017

By Collette Black

It’s that time of year again, tomorrow creative folk from all over the world descend upon London for a week full of festivities celebrating all things design. There’s a ridiculous amount of cool stuff to see and do over the next seven days so I thought I’d share a few events and installations that you may want to check out…

PETER PILOTTO TOWNHOUSE TAKEOVER

LDF6

Known for their bold use of prints and vibrant colours, design duo Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos return to Brompton Design District to take over an entire Victorian townhouse at 3 Cromwell Place. Fusing fashion, art, furniture and all that is fabulous over three floors of this west London home.

Villa Walala, by Camille Walala

LDF1

Head to Exchange Square in Broadgate, just behind Liverpool Street Station, to experience textile designer Camille Walala’s playful inflatable sculpture. Resembling giant building blocks decorated in her signature geometric style that she has fondly named ‘Tribal Pop’, the vibrant Villa Walala provides a very different breakout space for city workers and a fun place for anyone to explore. If you’re a fan of this, you can also check out Walala x Play, an immersive maze at Now Gallery in Greenwich.

DIY Art Market

LDF5

Head to my little area of London, Stoke Newington, this Sunday for your chance to pick up some unique prints, ceramics, sculptures, jewellery and a whole host of other things from 80 emerging artists alongside some more established creatives. While away your afternoon hunting for goodies at Epic Dalston from 11am til 6pm.

V&A

LDF3

As always, the V&A are hosting lots of amazing installations for LDF. It’s a bit of a maze so make sure you head to the Prince Consort Gallery for Flynn Talbot’s Reflection Room, an intriguing piece described as ‘an immersive coloured light experience’. The Tapestry Room is also being taken over by a 21.3 meter fluid structure of material created by Ross Lovegrove. Last year’s occupant, ‘Foil’ by Layer, was one of my favourite pieces and mostly because of its surroundings, the room is so atmospheric and interesting that I’m sure Lovegrove’s ‘Transmission’ will be just as special.

South East Makers club

LDF7

I find it so fascinating to watch our super talented makers at deVOL (click here to see more), so this instantly caught my eye. For the last weekend of LDF 2017 you can explore a new design trail in South East London. They have loads of cool events, workshops and even a designers pub quiz. You can also pop over to Carriage Ramp at Depford Market Yard to see our wonderful collaborator Sebastian Cox’s impressive Bayleaf collection. Find the full list of events here.
