deVOL Ceramics Pick Up their First Award!
17th November 2017
I just wanted to write a little blog to say a huge congratulations to our wonderfully talented ceramicist, Claire, who was awarded Best Tableware for her collection of deVOL handmade ceramic kitchenware at the House Beautiful Awards last night!! You’ll usually find Claire covered in clay at our potter’s wheel in the Cotes Mill ceramics studio, so it was really great to have her come down to London and to see such a lovely, hardworking person get up on stage to be recognised for her wonderful designs.
The ceramics studio started as a cool new adventure for deVOL, an idea that Paul and Helen had about being able to offer our customers more than just our kitchen furniture and welcome people who may not want a whole kitchen but just love the deVOL look. It’s not been easy going, there are so many challenges working with a new material, but over the last couple of years our little ceramics workshop has blossomed into quite an established studio. Claire, Hannah and Kat are now producing some really amazing tableware, tiles and pendant lights that both our customers and the press have fallen in love with. We’ve seen our ceramics on the pages of Elle Deco, GQ and Living etc. as well on our favourite interiors blogs all over the world!
The tableware was where it all started, simple and practical pieces that feel good to hold in your hands. Each one is handmade and has its own rustic charm. Claire’s quite an expert with colour and has created the dreamiest shades of creamy whites and soft blues mixed with terracotta and our much-loved crackle glaze. They seem to fit so perfectly with our kitchen furniture.
I find that everyone who pops into the showroom is now looking for something with a little more soul, people don’t want mass produced or throwaway items, they want something unique that adds character to a room, something special, something one-of-a-kind. What a lovely little present, a set of mugs or plates or bowls that you know are just a little bit different from everyone else’s. I actually gave my parents a couple of Claire’s espresso cups last Christmas and they absolutely love them. I’m yet to have a family meal without someone commenting on how beautiful they are.
The collection is constantly changing and growing, but the uncomplicated and classic style of each piece remains the same. You can take a look these very special tabletop items on the ceramics page of our website, in one of our London showrooms or at Cotes Mill where you may even get a chance to pop into our new studio and see Claire at work, it’s truly mesmerising to watch!
I’d also like to say a big thank you to House Beautiful and all the judges for such a wonderful evening and congratulations to all of the other winners, there were some really stunning designs!
