Bespoke Aged Copper
The newest addition to our worktop options here at deVOL, ‘Aged Copper’, a wonderfully toned material, this worktop is suitable for glamorous or very understated kitchens due to its subtle and natural ageing. It is so exciting for us to be able to offer this new material and service, as it allows our customers even more choices of unique and extremely stylish options for their new kitchen. Copper has a long history of being used for worktops and has amazing inherent antibacterial properties, although we do not recommend food preparation directly on the copper as it can taint the taste of food. We also recommend that you don’t cut directly onto copper as it is soft and will scratch.
deVOL’s copper worktops are all bespoke and made to order to ensure a completely sealed unit, fabricated from 1.5mm thick copper and then hand-welded or soldered at the corners. We also offer an option with integral copper sink, giving a fully sealed surface that is beyond beautiful. We also create a very distinctive draining section for all copper worktops used around sink areas, a tactile arrangement of tiny raised domes created from hammering the underside of the copper.
Copper naturally tarnishes over time but to speed up this process, we age the surface. The ageing is done using products that are designed for human consumption, so there are no nasty chemicals on the surface. The finish on the copper is the copper oxide itself and, as would happen naturally, the oxide will change according to what comes into contact with it, either becoming darker and more highly figured or becoming brighter and polished. The patinated surface should not be considered as a finish, rather the natural character of the copper itself. The patina will be removed if anything abrasive is used on the surface but unlike a traditional finish, the patina will return over time and the surface will reflect the way that it is used.
Oak (Classic or Rustic)
These solid 40mm thick oak worktops are all made here in our workshops. We use broad planks for a traditional look and each plank is biscuit jointed to create a really strong and solid worktop and finished with a high quality oil, which feeds and keeps the wood supple. Wood is beautifully warm and tactile and when it is looked after and oiled fairly regularly it will last a lifetime, but left to dry out it will begin to discolour and crack. So, if you love the natural beauty and tones of wood then, with a little care, it will reward you with an amazing patina that just gets better and better over time.
We recommend using the Rustic option (shown in the image) on islands and prep tables as it has a wonderful array of knots and grooves and natural patterning that gives it fascinating character. For areas around sinks and water we recommend the Classic finish which is less rugged, it has a smoother finish which repels water more efficiently.
This dark wood finish is new to our worktop range, a handmade sapele worktop that is stained and oiled to give a really rich deep colour and a high gloss finish. This look is authentic and a little bit glamorous, it’s a lovely change from stone and we think it works particularly well with our marble sinks, giving a really simple but special look. As with other woods, care is required on a fairly regular basis but its rewards are definitely worth it.
A premium hardwood worktop that comes in set sizes and is ready for cutting to fit on site by your installation team. The most popular option is stave oak, but sustainably sourced iroko worktops are also available, both great choices for our Shaker Kitchens. These worktops are not made by deVOL so they are a great option for people trying to be a little more economical. They are high quality, durable, easy to fit and easy to live with and have an impressive track record of being exceptionally straight and unlikely to warp. We recommend these worktops for use in all areas of your kitchen and our only stipulation is to try and avoid locating your taps directly into the wood. We offer a stone tap insert which not only sorts the water problems out but it is a beautiful and functional feature that many customers choose to have
