The Pot Hanger

 £1,100
Handmade to order, lead time: 2-3 weeks

Description

It has taken us a long while to settle on a pot rack that we really do like, we have been considering them for absolutely years, but never committed to a design. Since our blacksmith Alun joined us, we have really admired the strength and rustic beauty of forged metal and how he can turn and shape it into the simplest and most functional of products. So we knew the time had come to finally offer our customers a notoriously difficult product to source.

A simple oval curved shape, that is in fact created by Alun as he turns hot metal around an old mill wheel from here at Cotes, a simple form that is also very apt for a deVOL product made here at Cotes Mill. The design is about as simple as can be, because for us, it needs to hang pots and pans, be sturdy and practical and not steal the limelight. Traditional blackened steel, heated and dipped in beeswax with hand-forged hooks of varying lengths, it will hold up the heaviest of pans if located on a sturdy structural beam or ceiling joist.

Often pot hangers are twiddly or very contemporary, we like something a little less obvious as we love to see copper pans, herbs and the odd piece of linen taking centre stage.

Handmade to order, these pot racks are really special and we know what character they will add to a kitchen when hanging over a big range cooker or a big prep table.

hand forged, by deVOL

Forged iron is traditional and historical, we like the way it looks ‘old’ straight away and how you can just pop it into corners of your house and it feels right at home without needing much thought. Devilishly hard and steel black, although the colour slightly wears with use and time, revealing a little glint of silver sheen.

A solid piece of iron that is heated, softened, shaped and hammered by hand in the traditional way, it is an age-old craft that has a wonderful and mesmerising fascination. These products are most definitely for using, for giving you solid strength and a simplicity that makes them feel humble and reliable in a no-nonsense way. There are no frills and no ornamentation because you can do that with other accessories, these are for all those little places that just need a good looking, helpful hook or set of hooks and we love that utilitarian essence. There is such love for highly decorative interiors that these pieces feel almost an antidote to this and yet in their own way they are bold, so for the understated homeowner, the sensible homeowner or the flamboyant homeowner, these seemed to us to fit all those requirements.

Simple, naive and gutsy, these new accessories from deVOL are designed to be everyday items. Hard-wearing, useful, handmade and delightfully authentic, this pot hanger is another product which we hope will become a necessary, if not indispensable, part of people’s homes. Like the good old days when you bought something and it lasted forever, no fashion statement, more a lifestyle choice.
