Clerkenwell Design Week is back!!

17th May 2022

By Collette Black

After a two year break, the UK’s leading design festival will be back in Clerkenwell and so will we!! This show is quite special to us as it’s held in the home of both our London showrooms, an area filled with creative folk that we have grown to love for its calm and quirky atmosphere. It’s also the place we launched two of our kitchen ranges as well as lots of other deVOL goodies, we have so many happy memories. For this year’s show, we’re not only a showroom partner but we’re exhibiting in the British Collection too. I don’t want to give it all away but I thought I’d give you an idea of the cool and completely captivating display our Creative Director, Helen, has dreamt up.

The Haberdasher’s Kitchen in New York, inspired by traditional English textile shops.

Do you remember old haberdasher’s shops? Floor-to-ceiling cupboards, cubbyholes, sliding glass drawers and neatly organised racks, all moody and warm and inviting. Well, we’re inviting you to step back in time and enter our nostalgic haberdashery. A unique collection of mid-century inspired oak furniture filled with a fascinating array of lights, metalware, tiles, stools and more. All beautifully crafted by hand in our studios in Leicestershire, England.

Haberdasher’s shelves filled with curiosities.

deVOL has become so much more than kitchen cupboards, with flourishing ceramics and metal studios and even our own little forge. We have designed and made so many beautiful things for the home over the last few years, we thought this would be the perfect place to show them all off, but in true deVOL style, it had to be a bit different, totally atmospheric and beautiful. The idea of transporting people to a place that feels very authentic is exciting, it’s how we design all our showrooms and this display will be no different. Think old English shops with mannequins, fabrics, reels of cottons and bundles of wool, vintage boxes and cotton dresses and old hats… ohhh we can’t wait. Luckily, the British Collection is located in the Crypt on the Green, a beautiful room under the church with exposed brick walls and an impressive barrel roof, the perfect place to set up shop!

Our Lace Market Tiles are created using an original Victorian tile press.

Along with all the deVOL favourites, like our porcelain pendants and handcrafted handles and brass switches, we will be introducing you to two brand new designs!! First, The Heirloom Task Light, a grand and wonderfully authentic wall lamp inspired by original Victorian gas light fittings. The impressive wide glossy creamware shade is made by hand in our ceramics studio. It has the most beautiful crazing over the surface, little crackles that instantly make it feel like a vintage treasure. After being inundated with requests, we decided to add this one to the deVOL shop early – so you can see all the details here.

Next up, some brand new deVOL tiles. Our Studio Manager and creator of our iconic Emerald Green London Tiles, Claire, has been working on a very exciting whole new collection inspired by London Underground stations. Large earthenware pressed tiles in three delightful new shades. We’ve already given you a sneak preview of the ‘cream’ in our Tysoe Street showroom but the other two colours may be a little unexpected… any guesses?!

New deVOL tiles, a myriad of beautiful glossy cream tones.

I can’t show you any of the display yet, but as a little taster of the vibe, I thought I’d give you a glimpse at the delightfully traditional hardware shop in Hastings that inspired Helen…
