deVOL at Clerkenwell Design Week 2017!

25th April 2017

By Zoe Parker

With just under a month to go I thought it would be the perfect time to announce that we will be exhibiting at Clerkenwell Design Week 2017! We can’t wait to bring our beautiful Sebastian Cox Kitchen back for a third year running as part of the British Collection, showcase our range of deVOL artisan products and open up our brand new St. John’s Square showroom as an official CDW showroom partner. We’d love to see you at the show, give you a little tour of our exhibition stand and a big tour of the four floors and beautiful roof garden at our new East End showroom and townhouse.

Clerkenwell Design Week is pretty special to us for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s where it all started for our Sebastian Cox Kitchen. We launched this urban rustic beauty at CDW 2015 and since then it has gone on to win multiple design awards including a prestigious Design Guild Mark and the Homes & Gardens ‘Kitchen Design of the Year’ award.

It’s so cool to see how this range has grown and changed over the years, it still has the exact same charm and uniqueness that it did in the beginning, but somehow now it just feels a little more grown up. I’m sure it gets more beautiful each time I see it and I can’t wait to see what our very clever deVOL Design Team come up with for this year’s stand.

They haven’t told me too much yet, but I do know that we can expect a charming and refined display of cupboards featuring all the classic bits that make this range so special and so unique. The display will include a lovely long run of base cabinets with textured rough sawn fronts and copper finger holes, a big prep table standing on wonderfully elegant and slim legs, a little seating area where we can sit and chat and chill, and of course a couple of cupboards with beautifully delicate woven back panels, a detail that has become synonymous with this range.

The cool and contemporary Marylebone Kitchen project

‘British Grown, British Design, British Made’ has been our ethos for this kitchen right from the very beginning and it still stands to this day. We are very proud that The Sebastian Cox Kitchen is manufactured using only sustainable timbers which have all been grown here in the UK, and every single cupboard is handmade by our wonderful team of craftsmen in our Leicestershire workshops. Clerkenwell Design Week celebrates everything that makes this range special, it celebrates innovative design and craftsmanship, and it celebrates people and companies who share a passion for making really lovely things really well.

The Hampshire Barn Kitchen, featuring a mix of ‘Natural’ and ‘Lavender’ cupboards

Beautiful kitchens are what we’re known for at deVOL, but over the last year or two we have evolved into much more than just a kitchen company. Now, with our thriving ceramic and metal studios at Cotes Mill and a collection of beautifully handcrafted and practical objects for the home, we thought it only right to showcase these things of beauty on our British Collection stand at Clerkenwell Design Week too. So our Sebastian Cox Kitchen will be joined by a selection of our new artisan products, all handmade by our team of makers in Leicestershire. We will have cupboards displaying deVOL Cup Handles, Ceramic Kitchenware and Emerald Green London Tiles as well as our Crackle Pendant Lights and much loved Bum Stools.

Another reason Clerkenwell Design Week is special to us is that it takes place in the wonderful little part of London that we now call home, the place we chose to open up our first London shop and the place we fell so in love with that we decided to open up our second London shop there too. I suppose some people may wonder why we decided to open two showrooms just a ten minute walk from each other, but to us it makes total sense. We just love Clerkenwell, it seems to suit us and our customers really well, it’s somehow quiet and chilled but also busy with designer type folk. It’s not pretentious or too cool, but just cool enough.

The area is full of some lovely shops, restaurants, bars and hotels and it seems a world away from the really busy and hectic central London that people tend to expect. And something else that fascinates me every time I hear it, is that Clerkenwell is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, making it one of the most important design hubs in the whole world. So we thought, why move if we love this place so much? It’s perfect for us as a design-led company and it’s perfect for our customers too.

Bespoke cupboards painted in ‘Clerkenwell Blue’

We are very excited that our St. John’s Square showroom is an official CDW showroom partner this year and we can’t wait to welcome everybody in for a little nosey. This stunning space brings you the very best of our handmade English furniture and interior products, it’s a little London design paradise with its very aptly named ‘Clerkenwell Blue’ cupboards, pink walls, green ceilings, old antiques, palm trees and oil paintings and kooky Majolica pottery.

The show will also be the very first time we will be welcoming customers up into the deVOL townhouse above the shop. Each room unique and filled with deVOL cupboards and artisan products, as well as a selection of quirky antiques and vintage products from all over the world. And not forgetting my favourite part… we will also be taking you up to our dreamy little roof garden where there will be a selection of drinks and snacks to enjoy whilst admiring the stunning views over the square and watching all of the Londoners go by. Fingers crossed for lots of sunshine!
