– A bespoke service available to all deVOL customers
Hand-painted cupboards is something we have been wanting to offer our customers for a long time, the fashion for highly decorative interiors has become so popular we wanted to fit it into our kitchens and cupboards in some small and subtle way.
Over the past year we have been gathering inspiration for our first three designs and carefully choosing colours and scale to ensure the paintings look in keeping with deVOL cupboards and are authentic in their interpretation and finish.
Rosie, our in-house artist, paints everything by hand, she is meticulous in her approach to these cupboards and takes great care to ensure the finish is immaculate and incredibly detailed. Rosie is very talented as an artist and we consider these cupboards to be original pieces of artwork that will be treasured for generations to come. Like our furniture, this decorative painting is made to last and is truly unique and breathtakingly beautiful and can completely transform a small part of your home into something delightfully different.
– How the service works
The painting is done before the cupboard is finally put together, therefore you need to decide on your design and colours as soon as you place your order, as it is not possible to paint the cupboards once they are built.
We recommend our ‘Curiosity Cupboard’ as the most authentic and suitable cupboard for hand-painting, however, we are always open to other suggestions and will happily chat to you regarding your wishes and if we all feel it’s a suitable alternative then we will happily go ahead with the order. The glazed countertop cupboards are suitable too, not quite as historically correct but just as lovely. Our in-house Decorative Artist, Rosie, meticulously hand-paints each and every leaf and bloom.
– Choosing a design
We currently have three beautiful and quite different designs available to our customers, you can see examples on the following pages. We have worked carefully on the colourways we offer, however, Rosie is very happy to try other combinations. We recommend you chat to us about your ideas and give us colour references so we can quickly and efficiently let you know if the combinations will be suitable for your cupboard. Rosie will do samples prior to painting the final piece for any new colourways and will adapt and play around with the colours to give you a really good indication of how your piece could look. We charge a fee of £100 per day for any colour work that is required prior to finalising your choices.Rosie has refined a style of painting inspired by traditional chinoiserie and trompe l’oeil but with a unique deVOL take.
– New Designs
We are continually working on new designs and will make these available to customers as soon as they are completed. If you have an idea for a different design that is personal to you, we are very happy to work on making it a reality. Again, this service is charged at £100 per day for design work and we would suggest around 3 – 5 days for a new design to be finalised and settled upon. Rosie will email across ideas, sketches and colourways and work closely with you to get the final piece to your exact requirements while also ensuring we are comfortable with the look. It is so important for us to offer a personal service but also to be mindful of suitability, authenticity and appeal. We will inform you prior to any charges if we do not think your ideas are suitable.
We will offer a full refund on the design charges if we like the design and would like to include it in our range and you are happy to share your ideas with us. We are also very happy to keep it completely unique to you and will not re-use the artwork. This Printer’s Black Curiosity Cupboard has been adorned with our ‘Rambling Wild Roses’ design.
‘THE BOTANICAL’‘The Botanical’ design is so full of life and colour and we especially love it paired with a black painted cupboard.
The vintage feel and bold colours make ‘The Botanical Cupboard’ a favourite with our customers as it is so full of life and colour. The grand scale of flowers and leaves and the accurate depiction of stylish blooms is gracing our New York and Cotes Mill showrooms we love it so much. The black is particularly good as a backdrop for this design and Rosie finishes the painting with a beautifully discreet crackled glaze and lacquer which just adds to its character.A discreet crackle glaze is the final step to this design and adds a wonderfully authentic feel.
‘RAMBLING WILD ROSES’How special to have something completely unique and personal made for you, a true one of a kind.
This simple dog rose is scattered about the cupboard in a delightfully haphazard way. The composition is carefully chosen to allow a little space within the blooms and buds. This easy design is suitable for any room in your home and would be just as lovely in a bedroom or landing as a kitchen. This design works well with other colour combinations and so it’s a good one to pick if you are looking to match it to your specific room without to much pre-order design work. Our ‘Rambling Rose’ design painted simply in white on a soft ‘Trinity Blue’ background.
‘Wild Flowers’ is the most delicate and understated of all our designs.
Our latest design and something we worked hard to perfect, we wanted to get a feel of the past without being contrived or obvious. Rosie has carefully managed to get a feeling of delicateness and understated beauty with this cupboard. References from old botanical books and a sensitivity to colourways has made this piece feel nostalgic and so, so pretty.Soft suggestions of colour and the prettiest little flowers – we took inspiration from old botanical books here.
– Care of your hand-painted cupboards
Your cupboard is painted with a mix of oil and water-based paints. The backboards of the cupboard are usually the only part of the cabinet that is hand-painted, so by nature of its location it is unlikely to get much wear and tear that may cause damage. The paint is fairly hardwearing and can take a brief wipe or polish with a damp cloth as you may care for any delicate piece of furniture. The painting is made to last and is completely suitable as a decorative part of this cupboard, however, we would not advise any harsh scrubbing or scratching as this will damage the paintwork.
We suggest a crackle glazed finish on our ‘Botanical Cupboard’ to add a vintage and aged feel to the finished piece as it is particularly suited to this design, we can apply this slightly sturdier finish to any of our designs but be aware, it will slightly alter the paint colour. We just had time to style and photograph this fabulous cupboard before it went off to it’s new home.
We charge £1,000 per Curiosity Cupboard for the hand-painted finish on the backboards of the cupboard. If you would like the bottom half of the cupboard painted too, we charge an additional £500 per cupboard.
All design work on colourways or new designs is charged at £100 per day. We suggest 1 day is usually sufficient for a colour change on an existing design. For all new designs we would suggest between 3 and 5 days but this does, of course, depend on the design being considered. Please liaise initially with your Kitchen Designer, as this ensures your painted cupboard will be included on your schedule and therefore will be delivered at the same time as your kitchen. If you are not purchasing a full kitchen or require a new colourway or design then please contact:
