A cosy Shaker kitchen in upstate New York

We have really missed getting out and visiting our customers’ utterly lovely homes, being given a full tour and learning about the history and the renovation journey and finally settling down in the kitchen and shooting the space for our website and social media. Well, with the last year we’ve had this has been near to impossible, so we had to turn to our lovely customers to do the work for us… and what a wonderful job they have done!!

It has been such a pleasure to see their deVOL Kitchens and hear just how adored they have been, a haven amongst all this uncertainty. There’s one particular project that I fell completely in love with, a beautiful bungalow in upstate New York, and you all really loved it on our Instagram too so I thought what better place to showcase the whole space and the very impressive transformation than the deVOL Journal.

The dreamiest little weekend home, so peaceful and calm and only a couple of hours from New York City.

The owners got in touch in the summer of 2019 with plans to renovate their little kitchen for their property in the Catskills, New York. They actually first came across deVOL when they realised that many of the kitchens they had pinned on their inspiration Pinterest board were by us! They then ordered our brochure, visited our New York showroom to see our furniture in person and decided we were the right choice. This bungalow is a weekend home so they knew they wanted it to be peaceful and easy to be in, a space to look forward to escaping to for a few days of solace.

Their previous kitchen wasn’t quite right, it was outdated and a little cramped and ready for a freshen up…

The space is a little tired but even in these ‘before’ shots you can tell what a lovely room it is.

The old cupboards were outdated and the whole room was just ready for something new, check out that red sink and worktop!!

The property was built in 1926 and the owners wanted to ensure that their new kitchen didn’t seem too new, they wanted it to feel in keeping with the history and style and charm of the home. Our Shaker range was the perfect choice. This collection of cupboards is beautifully simple and impeccably made, they feel classic without being too traditional, unfussy but very special, memorable but not over the top… they really do fit happily into all sorts of homes and this one feels extra perfect.

You know a kitchen is good when it looks dreamy even without any worktops.

The cabinetry colour is actually a bespoke shade we mixed up for this project, a really gorgeous dark grey with a little hint of blue and green. I especially love it paired with the dark soapstone worktop by Barra & Trumbore, a local stone company. It’s easy to think dark cupboards and dark worktops could result in a kitchen that feels super moody and intense but I hope this goes to show that it doesn’t have to be the case. The walls have been kept pale and thanks to all the windows, the room still feels super airy and open and easy to be in.

Shaker cupboards finished with our handcrafted Aged Brass Classic Petite Handles, a match made in heaven.

The owners went with a dark soapstone worktop by Barra & Trumbore, so pretty and it looks great with our brass Ionian tap.

Ah and the floor! It’s by our sister company, Floors of Stone, and is their Chatsworth Oak parquet. We are the biggest fans of parquet here at deVOL and if you can make it look like it has always been there, well, that is the ultimate achievement. This wooden floor feels aged and charming and lived in and I just love that.

The dreamiest floor… and the pup agrees!!

The table at the end of the run was such a good addition. We see lots of kitchens with as many cupboards as possible squeezed in and although this leaves you with plenty of storage space, it also creates a kitchen designed purely for cooking and cleaning and not a place to hang out and enjoy. Our designers will never look at an area and think about all the cabinetry they can cram in, they will talk to the owner and figure out how the kitchen will be used every day and how they want it to look and feel and be. Adding a spot to sit is always such an important factor in our designs, whether it’s a lovely table like this or even just a little breakfast bar, having a place to perch and enjoy your morning coffee and the paper makes such a difference.

I can just imagine how many wonderful days and evenings have been spent around this table, chatting about everything and nothing.

What an amazing job the owners have done, they really have transformed their kitchen into the most welcoming place and our simple Shaker cupboards couldn’t have been a better fit for this wonderful home. A huge thank you to them both for choosing deVOL and allowing us to share their lovely space.
