9th April 2013

The seasoned auctioners

Today we went to Melton Mowbray fur and feather market with our friend Sago to buy some peacocks for the garden at Cotes Mill and some doves for the new dove cote that Ben Creed made a few weeks ago.  There was lots for sale, every kind of egg, every kind of hen, every kind of goose and duck, all selling  for anything from £1.00 to £125.00. The market runs at Meltom Mowbray cattle market, once a week, on a Tuesday morning. You register to get your bidding number then just follow the auctioneers around the yard until you reach the bird you want to buy. Its all very quick and once you have won your bid you buy a padlock to lock up your birds so no one runs off with them.

The first  birds we spotted were the fantail doves, and as you can see they are quite lovely, white as could be, very pretty and well mannered.

The second choice were an elegant pair of Peacocks, a happy couple who sat quite regally in their cage throughout the auction.

The last purchases were simultaneous, Sago was bidding for two young pairs of white doves and we had our eyes on some Italian Owl Pigeons.
