The Hampstead Kitchen

Total Cupboard Costs: £66,530

Classic cupboards, colour, texture and a sense of history, they were the ingredients for this deVOL kitchen in a 1918 Arts & Crafts house in one of Hampstead's most prestigious and perfectly-preserved neighbourhoods, isn't it all so smart.

It's the little details, the ones you perhaps don't notice on first look, that have charmed us so much in this room. Elegant glazed wall cupboards with no back panel, allowing our utilitarian Cream Subway Tiles to shine through in a subtle but very special way. An Aged Brass Pot Filler nestled above the cooker in the old chimney breast. The traditional coffered ceiling and how it feels so much more interesting than something flat, and the decision to take tongue and groove panelling a little way up the wall, from one side of the long sink run right to the other. Different width boards made of solid hardwood which are chamfered and given a bead, this feature adds so much texture and character.

Little bits aside, this room is big on furniture, storage and prep space but has cleverly managed to maintain a feeling of order and calm. An L-shaped cooker and sink run with Heirloom Task Lights above, a substantial bank of full-height larders concealing the pantry and the refrigeration, and a large Dairy Table with breakfast bar right in the middle of it all. Perched up there on a Helen's Stool, it has to be the very best seat in the house.

Wilkes Green is the colour on the painted furniture, chosen not only for its old-school feel (and how good it looks with that chequerboard marble floor) but to create continuity between inside and out - the kitchen steps down and out onto a very pretty garden. For the worktops it's a practical polished Eternal Statuario Silestone, we love marble but this convincing and easy-to-live-with interpretation is so great if you don't fancy putting up with the nuances that come with the real thing.
