A Shaker Scullery in Los Angeles
Cupboard Costs: £9,250

Designing a room inspired by your favourite place is such a smart and special thing to do. It might be a restaurant or a holiday, it actually might be a feeling over a look. Whatever it is, it's a wonderful starting point. Here, Mediterranean vibes were the goal and a big, open and airy room with tall beamed ceilings painted powdery blue was where it all began.
The moment we turned up to this new deVOL kitchen in the middle of North London, we felt as if we'd been transported to a little island somewhere in Spain or Greece. The sunny June day and that beautifully wild, shady garden full of worn terracotta pots and gnarly old trees helped!! but it was also most certainly our clever customers, their vision and their deVOL designer, Megan. Imagine that, feeling like you're on holiday all year round. We've said it before, but it really does make sense to try to make your home your very favourite place.
The layout of this room was quite simple. Just one long run of our humble Shaker cupboards, painted in Quaker Cream and topped with cool marble, housing all the necessities like the big fluted ceramic sink, dishwasher, oven, hob and storage. The large fridge and pantry cupboard (decorated with our beautiful Brass Ventilation Grilles) were banked at the end of the run to keep a sense of calm and order, and to ensure nothing detracted from that very cool ceiling and the pretty views out to the garden.
A vintage island, big wooden table and glazed dresser were all sourced by the customers to add a little depth and soul to the room. The mix of old and new was perfect in our book. These pieces also helped to make this so much more than just a kitchen, but a place to be sociable. You want people to want to hang out in rooms like this, so give them and yourself a place to be both part of the action and to settle down.
Patterned tiles from Milagros added to the Mediterranean vibes and we love how they ran the whole length of the back run. We always find that a bigger commitment to tiles, covering larger areas of the cooking run feels more like a design choice rather than just a functional necessity. A few Helen's Stools and a good smattering of our iconic Aged Brass hardware finished the room off with ease and style.
Because our Shaker cupboards are all made by us, as single pieces, you can buy as little or as much as you like. We offer installation, or delivery only, we can supply appliances and worktops, or you can source these yourselves. This couple went for something in the middle for their beautiful new kitchen, with deVOL delivering the cupboards and a few specially chosen accessories, and them sorting the rest. An easy process that allows you to get creative with all the fun bits.
If you'd like a little help from us to start making the changes, however big or small, to turn your home into the place you most look forward to coming back to, we'd love to hear from you.
